A preliminary report on worldwide commerce for the month of July confirmed the U.S. commerce deficit in items widened final month to $72.2 billion from $67.9 billion in June.

The commerce deficit in items had narrowed barely from February to May, and now seems to have widened two months in a row, though the information is preliminary and solely covers commerce in items and never commerce in companies.
