It was bedlam Saturday night as a packed OC Transpo bus exited RBC Ottawa Bluesfest following a live performance by Shawn Mendes at LeBreton Flats.
Special constables with OC Transpo responded to an alleged swarming and theft on the bus by apprehending some suspects and calling for the Ottawa Police Service. The incident, involving a number of alleged victims, occurred shortly earlier than midnight on Slater Street, simply east of Bronson Avenue.
A half-dozen police automobiles arrived on the scene inside minutes. Staff Sgt. Scott Pettis stated Sunday that the police and particular constables chased a number of males who had fled the scene.
“There was confusion, bystanders, a lot of people and witnesses,” he stated, “The bus was full.”
Pettis added that police “have some persons of interest, but we’re still trying to establish who was involved.”
Police stated that they had a smartphone video of a few of the occasions on the bus, equipped by a bystander. Given the variety of people on the bus on the time, it’s not clear if the video will assist with the investigation.
Police have been satisfied the swarming was “calculated and planned,” and warned festival-goers to be on guard when attending future live shows. “These guys knew what they were doing,” Pettis stated.
He added that police have been interviewing a number of eyewitnesses and making an attempt to find “a few people who were there and left early.”
